Match Ratings from the weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen in the League Cup Semi Final
The third game of the week and we approached it in exactly the same way, running into the same problems and making the same mistakes…
ALLAN MCGREGOR - 6
Wasn’t troubled at all by Aberdeen, will be sickened to lose another easily avoidable goal from a set piece.
JAMES TAVERNIER - 5
Really, really poor delivery once again. I’m not quite sure how this regresses so quickly in the space of a week? Feels like he’s trying to force it, and not playing his natural game. Needs to take a step back and focus.
JOE WORRALL - 6
Rarely troubled by the Aberdeen attack. Made a couple of unforced errors.
CONNOR GOLDSON – 7
Again, not really under much threat in this game.
JON FLANAGAN - 5
Had a bit of a rough time up against Gary Mackay-Steven, Barisic is starting to be a big miss as we need another avenue of attack which Flanagan just doesn’t offer.
RYAN JACK - 6
Did nothing wrong defensively, which is what you expect. I continue to have questions over whether he is required in the vast majority of our games.Doesn’t contribute effectively moving forward, found himself with 2 or 3 half chances/opportunities to assist that a more offensive minded midfielder would have made more of.
LASSANA COULIBALY - 5
Not at the races just now, perhaps he is still carrying a knock. Could do with a rest.
OVIE EJARIA - 6
Tries to at least find space and take the ball forward. Symptomatic of the team’s attacking performance, too often looked for the simple pass.
DANIEL CANDEIAS – 7 MOTM
Gave his all, was possibly our best player in the first hour or so. Can’t do it all on his own, doesn’t have the creativity to do so. I have to give MOTM to someone!
RYAN KENT - 6
For the third game in a row, we didn’t get him on the ball anywhere near enough. Huge mistake not to play him as the central attacker in my opinion.
UMAR SADIQ - 5
I don’t even blame Sadiq, you can’t expect him to come in from cold storage and perform in an occasion like that. We’ve known about the striking problem for over a month, plans should have been in place to either play an alternate formation or give him a level of game time to prepare himself. In saying that, he isn’t of the required quality.
SCOTT ARFIELD - 2
You don’t bring Scott Arfield on to chase a game. The manager said he was touch and go for Thursday, you also don’t say that if he’s not even going to make the game on Sunday. He was on the bench, therefore he should have been fit enough to play at least the first half and be taken off. Much more effective from the start of games.
GLENN MIDDLETON - 2
Can’t be blamed at all. He should have started wide with Kent centrally, 10 minutes at the end when we’re chasing a game isn’t going to help anyone.
STEVEN GERRARD - 4
I think Gerrard deserves a chunk of criticism here. We approached this game in the same manner as the previous two, and ran into the same issues. The
lack of substitutions has been an issue for months, he seems reticent to make decisions that may change the game one way or another. Sadiq shouldn’t
have started, we should have had another game plan designed to beat Aberdeen comfortably.
