A late sucker punch sends us out of Europe, after losing 1-0 to Rapid in Vienna. I felt this game was actually similar to the Celtic game earlier in the year, very defensive performance and as soon as we start to come out we get picked off on the break. We'll learn!
ALLAN MCGREGOR - 6 (MOTM)
His poor kick out was partially to blame for Rapid's goal, however there were still plenty of defenders between Rapid & the goal at that point.
JAMES TAVERNIER - 6
I thought he was excellent in the first half in a very defensive minded set up, but faded in the second. Terrific ball in for Goldson's chance but not much else offensively
GARETH MCAULEY - 5
Looked shaky throughout, particularly when being asked to play the ball on the deck.
CONOR GOLDSON - 7
So unlucky with a fantastic header in the first half. If that had gone in, it would have been interesting to see how the game panned out. We were certainly well set up to defend a lead.
BORNA BARISIC - 7 MOTM
Excellent performance in his first start since recovering from injury. Showed his class defensively and wasn't shy getting forward in the second half. Big positive having him back.
ROSS MCCRORIE - 7
My MOTM but for a moment of slackness in not tracking his man in the lead up to their goal. Thought he covered ground well, broke up play and his passing was an improvement on previously. Will feel aggrieved if he doesn't start at the weekend.
LASSANA COULIBALY - 4
A really below-par performance once again. Constantly losing possession and being caught with the ball. I'm not sure where he goes from here, but you'd imagine McCrorie is now ahead of him in the pecking order.
RYAN JACK - 7
Thought he kept possession well and was neat and tidy, however playing in the midfield two with a holder behind him, he needs to be more creative.
GLENN MIDDLETON - 5
Tough one for Middleton given how deep Rapid sat and how deep our full backs and midfield were. He gave it a good effort though, and almost got some success on a couple of occasions. Good learning experience if nothing else.
SCOTT ARFIELD - 6
Wasted out wide when we were crying out for some central support to Morelos. Coulibaly may have been a better option out there if all we were looking for was a wide sitting midfielder. That would have allowed Arfield to move centrally a lot earlier.
ALFREDO MORELOS - 7
Gave his all, enjoyed his battle with Barac but unfortunately can't say he definitively got the better of him. Didn't get booked!
EROS GREZDA - 3
This change allowed Arfield to move centrally as we finally started to attack in the game. Grezda wasn't hugely involved though.
KYLE LAFFERTY - 2
Came on late on to chase a winner, but the Rapid goal killed any hopes of that.
STEVEN GERRARD - 7
Probably a 7 overall for the European run for me. Fantastic achievement to get into the group stages and we can't ignore that. Nor can we ignore the frustration of the missed chances - and incorrect refereeing decisions - that would have seen us qualify relatively comfortably from the group.
