Motherwell 3 - 3 Rangers - Player Ratings

An uneven performance from Rangers at Fir Park sees us off back down the M74 with a share of the spoils after today's 3-3 draw with Motherwell.

Adam Thornton gives his view on how the players rated on the day.

Alan McGregor: 6

His first real blip since he came in. Slipped at the first goal and will think he could have done better at the last. He coped very well with the Motherwell corner onslaught up until that point, though.

John Flanagan: 6

Solid performance again from Flanagan without being earth shattering. Moved from right centre back to left after 20 minutes and was able to handle Main's threat a lot easier than Katic/Goldson had been doing despite the size difference. Mr Dependable.

Conor Goldson: 4

A shocker of a performance which I didn't see coming at all. Slipped for the first goal and never recovered. Looked very shaky in a back three, slightly less so when moved from the centre over to the right. Hasn't put a foot wrong before today, so hopefully just a blip.

Niko Katic: 6

Our best defender on the day, looked a lot more comfortable when he was switched to the middle centre back. Usually steps out and attacks the ball, but played slightly more withdrawn of the 3 today. Revels in the last ditch defending, so he had quite a lot to do!

James Tavernier: 4

What will be known as a 'James Tavernier' performance. Excellent going forward, horrific defensively. Put the ball of the game in for Lafferty's first goal, but was posted missing for Motherwell's second and third goals. Didn't look comfortable in a 3-5-2.

Borna Barisic: 7

Excellent display from the big Croatian. An absolute hammer of a left foot, unashamedly looks for the cross on every occasion. Will be a real asset for us, ran his heart out up and down the flank. Will be a big miss on Thursday night.

Andy Halliday: 6

Was relatively neat and tidy in possession and put himself about well before being subbed. Didn't let anyone down and certainly does a job, but not the answer long term.

Ryan Jack: 6

Quieter game for Jack, used the ball well but was unable to force himself into proceedings as we opted for the longer ball more often than not. Needs to force the play a bit more to advance us up the park.

Ovie Ejaria: 7

Good display from the young Englishman, put himself about well against a very physical team. His touch and awareness gives him that vital second of time and he used the ball well in the first half. Got into some good positions, culminating in him scoring the third after some good approach play.

Kyle Lafferty: 9

Excellent performance on his first start after returning to the club. Took both goals very well, provided a real cutting edge up front and never gave Motherwell's defence a minutes peace. MOTM

Alfredo Morelos: 7

Typical tireless shift up top, worked well with Lafferty in the first half and did as well as he could with the scraps he received after the break.

Scott Arfield: 3

Replaced Halliday halfway through the second half, midfield were being bypassed by this point so he had little to no effect on proceedings.

Glenn Middleton: 3

Came on late in the second half, I assume to give us an out ball but we were camped in our own box and couldn't utilise him at all.

Lee Wallace: 3

Return for the former club captain, literally on the field for 60 seconds to defend the corner that led to the equaliser. Not at fault.

Steven Gerrard: 5

First real set back today. I think 3-5-2 is a formation worth exploring, but not sure this was the right game to try it out. Substitutions were a little odd, too. He nailed the issues in his post match presser as usual though, and theres nothing he can do about Goldson slipping or Tav brain-farting for the goals.

Thanks for the player ratings Adam and I agree with most of them. Couple of thoughts though for you. I’m not sure how Lee Wallace could be rated at all as he literally never touched the ball (BTW I really really rate Wallace and I’m delighted he is back in the squad and around the first team). Also not sure how Glen Middleton could get a rating of 3. I’ve watched the game twice now and the game passed Middleton by. Not his fault but it didn’t fall for him the way we were hoofing the ball clear in panic and then panicking some more when it came straight back at us. Final thought is on our captain’s performance. Great going forward but his weaknesses were totally exposed for all to see. It’s a sorry state of affairs when teams TARGET our captain since they identify his defending and heading ability as a weakness. Tav was pretty poor and I would have given him a rating of 2 or possibly 3 if i was feeling generous but didn’t rate him as the same as Goldson. Thanks again for the ratings and your tactics pods are top notch WATP. @TBayRSC

I agree with most you say. Main gripe is on Goldson. He was never as bad as u and some others are making out. I suggest watch game and score him correctly as a 6/10
